The Axiom of Infinity and transformations j: V -> V

چکیده

We suggest a new approach for addressing the problem of establishing an axiomatic foundation for large cardinals. An axiom asserting the existence of a large cardinal can naturally be viewed as a strong Axiom of Infinity. However, it has not been clear on the basis of our knowledge of ω itself, or of generally agreed upon intuitions about the true nature of the mathematical universe, what the right strengthening of the Axiom of Infinity is — which large cardinals ought to be derivable? It was shown in the 1960s by Lawvere that the existence of an infinite set is equivalent to the existence of a certain kind of structure-preserving transformation from V to itself, not isomorphic to the identity. We use Lawvere’s transformation, rather than ω, as a starting point for a reasonably natural sequence of strengthenings and refinements, leading to a proposed strong Axiom of Infinity. A first refinement was discussed in later work by Trnková-Blass, showing that if the preservation properties of Lawvere’s tranformation are strengthened to the point of requiring it to be an exact functor, such a transformation is provably equivalent to the existence of a measurable cardinal. We propose to push the preservation properties as far as possible, short of inconsistency. The resulting transformation V → V is strong enough to account for virtually all large cardinals, but is at the same time a natural generalization of an assertion about transformations V → V known to be equivalent to the Axiom of Infinity. • 2000 Mathematics Subject Classification: Primary 03E55; Secondary 03E40. •

SUPER- AND SUB-ADDITIVE ENVELOPES OF AGGREGATION FUNCTIONS: INTERPLAY BETWEEN LOCAL AND GLOBAL PROPERTIES, AND APPROXIMATION

Super- and sub-additive transformations of aggregation functions have been recently introduced by Greco, Mesiar, Rindone and v{S}ipeky [The superadditive and the subadditive transformations of integrals and aggregation functions, {it Fuzzy Sets and Systems} {bf 291} (2016), 40--53]. In this article we give a survey of the recent development regarding the existence of aggregation functions with ...

Strong Axioms of Infinity and the search for V

The axioms ZFC do not provide a concise conception of the Universe of Sets. This claim has been well documented in the 50 years since Paul Cohen established that the problem of the Continuum Hypothesis cannot be solved on the basis of these axioms. Gödel's Axiom of Constructibility, V = L, provides a conception of the Universe of Sets which is perfectly concise modulo only large cardinal axioms...

Study of Variation of the J-integral and the Fracture Toughness in Blunt V-notches under Mode I Loading

Fracture assessment of U- and V-notches is important in mechanical engineering. One can use the J-integral as fracture parameter in order to predict the critical fracture load in notches. The critical value of the J-integral in cracks is a function of the material properties. In notches, however, the material properties as well as the notch dimensions affect this critical value (named fracture ...

Strong Statements of Analysis

An Axiomatic Characterization of the Single-Source Shortest Path Problem

This theory is split into two sections. In the first section, we give a formal proof that a well-known axiomatic characterization of the single-source shortest path problem is correct. Namely, we prove that in a directed graph G = (V,E) with a non-negative cost function on the edges the single-source shortest path function μ : V → R ∪ {∞} is the only function that satisfies a set of four axioms...
